Happy Holidays! [Nov. 19th, 2007|09:24 pm]

Since my last update it seems like I've been doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and studying.  Fortunately I successfully passed my HII exam (with 7 questions to spare!) and moved into the CRR unit.  Boring I know, but now you know why I don't update my journal very often.   But I finally have a few cool things to share!

As readers of Greg's journal know, he came back home at the end of October and we went to a med. student Halloween party.  Hilarity ensued, as did drunken fun, but can you blame us!   Everyone had great costumes:  Jack Black and Tenacious D, The Village People, She-Ra, Jem along with Synergy,  the Green Giant and Sprout, and even a Summer's Eve Douche were just a few of the best.  Greg and I went as Trinity and Neo.  And I'm proud to say my home-made pleather pants looked AWSOME!  I'm quite proud of myself, especially since I've never made pants before.

Well that's about it for now.  I'm getting ready to go and visit Greg for Thanksgiving and I'm really looking forward to it.  I only get to stay for a few days and I have to study while I'm there, but it will still be a nice break from everything.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Stupidity on the Net [Oct. 3rd, 2007|01:58 am]
[mood |worriedworried]

I decided to take a study break tonight and check my e-mail.  To my dismay, I had a forwarded message from someone (who will remain anonymous) touting the dangers of aspartame.  After reading the message (click to read a version posted on Snopes)  I simply couldn't believe that aspartame was really that dangerous.  In the last 2 weeks alone I've personally gone through one-and-a-half cases of diet soda!  I'm sure you're all thinking that I'm going to die now, or at least develop MS, or cancer, or some other horrible disease.  Or at least you do if you read the "article".  Well sorry to disappoint, but no, that wonderful little piece of junk mail contained about as much scientific fact as the theory of creationism.

But still, I dare you to google aspartame and find a reliable source of information (one that a high-school teacher or a college professor would actually accept) that determines whether this chemical is actually dangerous or not.  I admit that I had to use PubMed to actually find some reliable articles.  For those of you who don't want to do any real research I'll just let you know that aspartame is safe to consume - that's why the FDA still allows its use!  Just like the myth that immunizations cause autism, there is no scientific evidence to back up the claim!

I consider anonymous to be an intelligent, well-educated person, and yet he/she still fell for this myth.  I remember a post written by [info]thephysicsninjathat discussed a similar concern for the lack of scientific literacy in the general population.  He linked the site that describes the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide and even though it's an obvious spoof to anyone that paid attention in chemistry, a lot of people actually signed a petition that tried to ban this chemical!  I'm tempted to prove my point to anonymous by showing him/her this website and seeing if he/she believes it's real.

Well it's back to studying for me so I can continue to protect my future patients from all of those terrifying chemicals while they continue to kill themselves with cigarettes.

Simpsons Sing the Blues [Jul. 18th, 2007|09:05 pm]
As promised, in my friend Swearsforcares blog here are a few youtube videos I found featuring the music from "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" album.  Talk about flashbacks to your youth!  I also thought it was a fitting topic since the Simpson's Movie is coming out in a few days so enjoy!

Deep Deep Trouble
I personally think this is the best song on the whole track, and BONUS - it's actually animated by Matt Groening.  For some reason the clip actually ends around the 3:30 mark so just ignore the rest

Do the Bartman - Another Matt Groening animation

Because I don't feel like embedding anymore videos the rest are hyperlinked for your continued enjoyment.  Unfortunately I couldn't find anymore animated songs, but they're still entertaining

Sibling Rivalry - growing up I felt like this was my own personal theme song - but then again I bet almost every other brother and sister felt the same
Look at All Those Idiots - featuring Mr. Burns and Mr. Smithers
Moanin' Lisa Blues
School Days
Born Under a Bad Sign
God Bless the Child
I Love to See You Smile
Springfield Soul Stew
- for some reason this reminds me of the songs you used to hear from the Saturday Night Live band in the 80's and 90's

I think the first 4 songs I posted are the best, but the rest are still entertaining.  Let me know what you think!

David Blane is the DEVIL! [May. 7th, 2007|10:28 am]

I've been having the best luck finding hilarious things to post this week!  Here's another good one, enjoy!

Horrifying and yet Hillarious [May. 5th, 2007|09:06 pm]

I challenge you to watch this to the end without laughing.  I'm still trying to decide if it was created for gay men or for seriously disturbed women.  The "horse ride" had me rolling and so did the close-up shots at the end.  Enjoy!

Things that made me laugh today! [May. 2nd, 2007|08:33 pm]

Today was a great day on Cynical-C!  I had to share two of the great videos they posted with those of you that still don't follow this blog (losers!)

First off - Creationism in a Nutshell
My favorite part is the guy acting out the discussion in the background, the accordion is pretty good too though.

Next, The Zimmers!  This is a really great cover of "My Generation" by The Who.  The info bar on YouTube says that this band was created by a BBC documentarian to raise awareness of the treatment of the elderly in Britain.  Apparently they are going to be releasing this song as a single on May 21st, I think I'm going to keep my eyes open for it.

And finally some of my favorite dictation errors and patient comments (to see more click here)

*RN note on 2 month-old baby: “Pt tolerated procedures well. Currently ambulating without difficulty."

*Medical student during rounds: "The rectal exam was difficult. He kept pulling away even though I was comforting him with my hands on his shoulder"

*"The voices in my head are driving me crazy."
   -Insightful Psych patient.

* "Does that feel good?"  - Extraordinarily nervous medical student during first pelvic exam.

* "The b!tch shot me."
      - Chief Complaint of a trauma patient.

Have a good day everyone!

Looks like someone just grazed you're anatomy [Apr. 1st, 2007|06:44 pm]
[Tags|]

One of the Med. students found this and posted in on facebook.  I couldn't resist sharing it with everyone too!  Almost every med. student watches House or Gray's Anatomy (and in most cases they watch both).  If you are at all familiar with the story lines of these shows you'll laugh you're ass off like we did!  ENJOY!

I love Mad TV!

And  now for a regular update:

A group of us went hiking today.  We started out at the Kinkade spillway (a really cool waterfall-like spillway comming off of Kinkade lake just outside of Carbondale.  We had tons of fun slipping and sliding on rocks as we climbed up it.  If anyone ever wants to come visit me in the summer I'll have to take you out there.  After fun in the water we headed for Little Grand Canyon for some real hiking and had a blast.  The trail is about 4 miles long and starts out paved until you start to head down into the canyon (and since it just rained yesterday it was wonderfully muddy, but still worth it.)  You end up climbind down this creek-like waterfall and following a twisting trail along a river bottom until you have to climb back up another "waterfall" and head back up to the top of the trail. (all along the river bottom there were small waterfalls too, we got pictures of several of them, but we didn't think to get pictures of the two we actually climbed on...d'oh!)

All told it took about 2 hours for us to make the loop thanks to several photo-ops, some trouble navagating a partially submerged path (the very bottom of the river bed had turned into a quagmire thanks to yesterdays rain!), and slipping and sliding up and down the waterfalls.  But it was a GREAT trip!  Here are some pictures my friend took on the trip (I'm not cool enought to own a digital camera so I pirated them from her facebook site - Sorry Katie!)

In general life here in Carbondale sucks and I can't wait until I move back up to Springfield for the remainder of Medical school, but I will miss the beautiful countryside around here.  It's really a nature lover's dream come true.  The hiking is wonderful and the wine trails are great too.  I think that's the only thing I will miss about this place.  I guess I'll just have to come down for a weekend visit every now and then when I need my hiking fix!

Well it's back to studying!  Have fun everyone!

STUDY BREAK! [Feb. 26th, 2007|06:05 pm]
[Current Location |My apartment]
[mood |stressedstressed]

Hello everyone!  I've decided to take a study break and share with you some of the things that have kept me going this past week.  I hope you enjoy!

I just found this today and considering the recent posts of thephysicsninja I thought it was fitting.  I really enjoyed the music playing in the background.  I will admit though, I didn't find it on my own, I have to credit cynical-c for this one.  If you haven't checked out this blog you're really missing out.  Its updated just about every day and you can almost always something interesting.  Anyway, on with the show:

There have been several songs floating around Lindegren the past few weeks.  They were written by medical students at New York Medical College for an APAMSA (Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association) culture show.  This is apparently a yearly competition where some really good songs and videos are produced (these are older ones).  I really like that some of the professors at NYMC have agreed to be a part of the music videos.  Some of them don't know what the hell they're doing while the others are really into it.

I don't know if you'll find these songs as funny as we did (since they are songs about the rigors of med. school) but I hope so.  Let me know!  And before you ask, YES we are geeks.

STUDY BACK - one of my favorites  (we were actually able to I.D. the books these people  were studying from - and yes I do own/study from most of them!)

READ - This one isn't as good but some of the professors are great (especially the one at the end dancing to the music!)

I saved the best song for last!  Unfortunately it's not a YouTube video and I don't know how to embed an audio file so you'll just have to click the link if you're interested.

Scrubbin - Just incase you're confused it's a song about the joys of the gross anatomy lab

And finally:

REAL MED. STUDENTS OF GENIUS
there are 9 separate movies and I didn't want to link all of them individually so here's the whole group.

Well it's back to the books.  "My tests will whip me if I misbehave!"

GOD DAMN IT! [Feb. 18th, 2007|04:05 pm]
[Current Location |The 5th level of hell]
[mood |grumpygrumpy]
[music |sounds of a broken washer]

Ok everyone, it's official: my apartment SUCKS!  While I still have heat, this time I have ANOTHER problem.  My washer just ATE my sheets!  I managed to salvage the pillow cases and the fitted sheet, but my flat sheet is hopelessly stuck UNDERNEATH the agitator.  HOW THE HELL DOES THAT HAPPEN!  I've made another call to the landlords and hopefully they can fix my washer too.  Thanks to a fellow med. student that lives a few apartments down I can rinse what's left of my laundry and dry it so I don't have a pile of wet stuff sitting in my sink.  Joy.

So let's see, that's a leaking refrigerator, a broken furnace, and now a sheet-eating washing machine all within the last 2 months.  Renting sucks!  Hopefully my few remaining months here in Carbondale will be better, but my track record isn't very good so far.
